The History of GMC

Now that you know who owns GMC, let’s take a look at the humble beginnings of this automotive titan. It’s easy to appreciate the company it is today, but how did it start? Let’s go back in time to examine the history of GMC:

  • 1902: Rapid Motor Vehicle Company is founded by brothers Max and Morris Grabowsky. This company went on to develop some of the first trucks in the world.
  • 1909: Rapid Motor Vehicle Company is acquired by General Motors in 1909. This resulted in General Motors Truck Company.
  • 1912: The first truck is mass-produced, and over 22,000 models were sold.
  • WWII Era: The company becomes a provider to the U.S. military and made over 600,000 trucks for military application.

Over time, the company produced more and more models, growing into the company that they are today. Did you know that GMC and Chevy trucks are made in the same plants and even use the same parts?

Where Is GMC Made?

Even though you can find GMC vehicles in Fort Madison, that’s not where they’re made. The GMC headquarters are located in Detroit, Michigan, but GMC vehicles are built in different locations across the country and even in some areas of Canada.

  • Fort Wayne Assembly Plant in Roanoke, Indiana: This is where the Sierra is built.
  • Arlington Assembly Plant in Arlington, Texas: This is where the Yukon and Yukon XL are built.
  • Lansing Delta Township Assembly Plant in Delta Township, Michigan: This is where the Acadia is built.
  • Shreveport Operations in Shreveport, Louisiana: This is where the Canyon is built.
  • Wentzville Assembly Plant in Wentzville, Missouri: This is where the Savana is built.
  • CAMI Assembly Plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada: This is where the Terrain is built.
